Assam: Historic Jamuna In Sivasagar Cleared Of Encroachments In Major Drive
The Sivasagar district administration has launched a major eviction drive at the historic Jamuna area to clear long-standing encroachments, following discussions with various stakeholders and protests by the All Tai Ahom Students' Union (ATASU). The operation began on Saturday morning with the assistance of the district administration. Several people had allegedly occupied parts of the historic site over the years, triggering protests by ATASU, which had repeatedly raised concerns over the encroachment. Led by its central president, Basanta Gogoi, the students' organisation had also undertaken eviction activities on its own in the past as part of its campaign to protect Jamuna. The latest action follows a meeting held on November 4 at the Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner's office. The discussion involved the local MLA, ATASU representatives and some of the people occupying the Jamuna area. The meeting was convened to discuss measures to protect the historic site and address the issue of encroachment. It was decided that the district administration would take action against all parties found to have encroached upon the area. Meanwhile, the Assam government has been approached for approval of Rs 1.6 crore as compensation for buildings belonging to those who had received government allotments at Jamuna. A letter seeking the required approval has been sent to the state government, according to the information provided.
